The coordinator of the European Masters in Technology for Translation and Interpreting is University of Wolverhampton, which is represented in the consortium by the Research Group in Computational Linguistics (RGCL). RGCL was founded by Prof. Ruslan Mitkov in 1998 and is part of the Research Institute of Information and Language Processing (RIILP). The group is internationally recognised for its high-level research with strong international and inter-sector collaboration, and is renowned for its innovative Natural Language Processing (NLP) research and development of various NLP tools and resources. The group has scored very well in recent national evaluations. By way of example, in RAE’2008 Computational Linguistics was entered into the “Linguistics” Unit of Assessment. Wolverhampton was ranked joint third with two others in a large group of old, research-intensive universities.
The group continuous seeks to identify topics where language technology research outputs has clearly benefit society, applying its research to develop tools and resources which will have a positive impact on both academic beneficiaries and in the wider community. One of such research areas is that of translation technology. In this area, the group is actively pursuing research on topics such as translation memory, quality estimation, corpora for translation. In the past, the group has coordinated the EXPERT project, a very successful Marie Curie training network which trained young researchers in the area of hybrid language translation technology. In addition to EM TTI, RGCL is currently delivering two masters programmes: Masters in Computational Linguistics and Masters in Practical Corpus Linguistics for ELT, Lexicography and Translation.
